Community Spotlight: Eternal Super League

Special guest wowarlok joins us to introduce a new community initiative: the Eternal Super League!

The Eternal Super League (ESL) is a new tournament series designed to highlight the beauty of the Eternal format. We are preparing to put on a show that players across the Netrunner community can enjoy and showcase all the creativity and self expression that such a large card pool can provide.

For those who may not be familiar, Eternal is the format with the deepest card pool there is, where (almost) every card from every set ever printed is legal. The main tool to balance the format, outside of a very small ban list that prohibits the use of the most game-breaking of cards, is the Eternal Points List. The points list identifies cards that are either very powerful or part of extremely potent combos, and assigns them a cost between 1 and 3 points. When building an Eternal deck players can ‘buy’ a playset of cards from the point list by paying the point cost. Each deck has a budget of 7 points to spend.

In the ESL you can expect to see the synergy between cards that were never designed to be played together coalesce in the most powerful decks ever created, from infinite credit combos to hyper efficient running machines, as some of the most experienced players in the format pilot them with expertise.

The ESL was devised by myself and anarchomushroom, who got the inspiration for the ESL from the Vintage Super League, a similar tournament that Magic: The Gathering pros organized to show off their equivalent ‘all the cards’ format.

For this league we invited nine of the most prominent Eternal players currently playing, who will play in a nine-week Round Robin tournament for the chance to win an alt-art of their design.

Each competitor will lock their decklists before the first round and will get the chance to update them – or change them completely – every three weeks. It will be up to them to decide if they trust the decks they played thus far or if they need additional tricks for the upcoming matchups.

Here’s the list of players competing in the ESL:

  • Augustus Caesar
  • HaverOfFun
  • Jai
  • larrea
  • OF15-15
  • wren
  • Silent_Arbiter
  • Toron
  • Ysengrin

For your viewing pleasure, we have also assembled a cast of popular content creators and Eternal experts to go over the games that the players have played and recorded during each round.

You can catch us live on the Eternal Super League youtube channel every Sunday, starting from the 9th of February at 19.00 UTC, and you can watch the past streams on the same channel.

As Elevation is fast approaching, our players are ready to show you the best that FFG cards can do before they ultimately rotate out of Standard. We hope to see you all there as the action in the Eternal Super League begins this weekend – you won’t want to miss it!
